Feeling disconnected from yourself, your life and the people within it? Its okay, it's human to feel lost at times. I work with individual's over 18 who are looking to explore the intricacies of their internal and external worlds to deepen understanding of self and life, to strengthen connection to self and community. This includes exploring the heavier more uncomfortable and at times painful feelings such as anxiety, dissociation, depression, rage and grief. We create space for feelings so they aren't so heavy, before harnessing them to move you towards your community, your purpose and your sense of "wellbeing".

Are you struggling with grief, loss or the impact of trauma? Are you a victim of crime? Sometimes we can cope with all that life throws at us, and sometimes it can be helpful to get some support. You may be feeling overwhelmed by a mixture of emotions, such as sadness, anger, guilt, regret or shame, or be struggling with anxiety or depression. You may be having difficulty connecting with those around you, or be unsure whether your experience is normal. Often just a few sessions with a caring, down to earth and skilled counsellor can help you navigate through challenging times.

I bring four decades of experience in mental health, art, design. I work with individuals, couples, and family members who seek to change their relationships with themselves and others. I aim to open possibilities to people who have little hope for change, struggle with depression, anxiety, and trauma symptoms, feeling overwhelmed and lost. This is often accompanied by counterproductive soothing behaviours such as substance use, addiction to gambling, gaming, sex, or screen use. Further, some clients may stay in relationships that deepen their belief that they cannot become the agents of their own lives.

You used to be driven, but now you don't even recognise yourself. You feel isolated, ignored, and utterly exhausted. A newfound impatience is taking its toll on your relationship with your partner and children. Have you wondered when this began or why it is impacting you so heavily? You might have been reading about stress due to motherhood or menopause, but that doesn't mean you have to accept it. You long to retake control of your life, but you're uncertain where to begin.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
