My name is Johnny (he/they). I am an Accredited EMDR and Cognitive Analytic Therapy (CAT) Practitioner. I am interested in working LGBTQIA+ people, young people, survivors of trauma, people experiencing relationship difficulties, people wanting to learn more about who they are, people who use addictive behaviours as a way of managing, including drugs, alcohol, self-harm, eating disordered behaviours and thoughts of suicide. I understand how hard it can be to talk about traumatic experiences and I strive to bring warmth, partnership, acceptance and compassion to all my work.

Something isn’t quite right. It may be that you can’t stop yourself from worrying. Or you are compulsively avoiding things (places, people, certain situations). Perhaps you find yourself flying into a sudden, uncontrollable, panic. It may be that you are feeling down: you can’t shake the sadness, emptiness, or hopelessness in your life. You may be feeling worthless and guilty too. It could be your relationships that aren’t working (partner, friends, family, boss, or colleagues). Perhaps past experiences are haunting you so that you lose your connection to the present and the people in it. Perhaps it's all of the above.

I work with anyone who is suffering from psychological distress. This could be due to trauma, mental health issues or difficulties with relationships. Learning skills to manage these difficult issues is an essential first step however I prefer to help my clients heal their deeper pain rather than just manage it. Working with your ways of coping in the present might be how we start, but if you're open to deep healing, we can go into the past and resolve the reasons for your struggle with various pscyhological approaches.

We both know that dealing with the effects of trauma, anxiety, depression, autism, and ADHD requires more than just "taking a deep breath" and "being mindful". While calming strategies are great, I can promise that our work together will go a lot deeper than just the surface level calming skills you could find on YouTube. No more band-aids; I want to help you find lasting solutions, and work with you to build your ideal life. We can do this with a combination of tools to manage everyday challenges; while also delving into the root causes of your concerns.

There are times in our lives when we get that sinking feeling that something is not right. Such moments often follow major life events, such as grieving for a loved one, the break-up of a relationship, moving countries, facing health issues or even children leaving home and retirement. Other times, they appear from nowhere. Resulting feelings can be so pervasive that they impact our mental, emotional and physical well-being, creating conflict in relationships and impact our ability to function. They may also start manifesting in one’s seeking isolation, inability to see joy in life and can lead to depressive conditions.

Male Counsellors

As a man, why might I want to see a male therapist?

There are many reasons a man might wish to work with a male therapist, including a degree of shared identity, which may help client and therapist connect to each other and allow for a more free-flowing discussion of issues that can be deeply personal. Some men may feel more comfortable talking to a male therapist about relationship concerns, the pressures they feel around the roles society and family place on men, career or job challenges, self-esteem, or anger problems. For some men who have not had a male role models in their lives, a good male therapist may be especially helpful.

How can I find out about a therapist’s experience treating men?

Individuals looking for treatment should feel comfortable directly asking a therapist about their history treating men overall and the issues that arise in therapy with men. A good therapist will be happy to discuss such matters as well as their educational background, approach to treatment, and how they think they can aid a prospective client. Prospective clients should also ask what the expectation is for treatment, and what the fee structure is, and whether and which insurance plans are accepted.

Can clients benefit from having a therapist of the same gender?

Therapy is not gender-specific, but some men as well as women feel more comfortable opening up about their experiences and history with a male therapist. An individual may feel that they have to explain less background information and be on the same page more quickly, particularly when discussing gender-specific challenges, in the case of male clients. Some women have prior negative experiences with women that predispose them to prefer working with a male in therapy. That said, a good clinician can transcend most if not all gender concerns. Ultimately, the most important factor in therapy is the connection and trust the client is able to build with the practitioner.

Would a male therapist have specific training in treating men?

Generally, no. There are no certifications for treating men specifically, but there are continuing education classes that therapists may take that focus on treating men as a group. There are many therapists who focus on men and male issues in their treatment and therefore have experience and expertise in this domain.
