My name is Stephanie, and I’m a qualified counsellor from the Blue Mountains, Sydney. I’m dedicated to helping people untangle the thoughts, feelings, actions and experiences that may prevent them from being at their best. Mental health should be taken as seriously as physical health. It’s important to nourish your body with good food and exercise, but it’s just as important to nourish your mind and spirit with patience, compassion and understanding.

I work with anyone who has the willingness to show up each session. It may not always be easy, but there is something special about choosing yourself in that moment. I adopt a warm but upfront approach, come as you are and be honest with where you are at.

I work with people who experience anxiety, panic attacks, depression, stress, low self-esteem, grief, sleep issues, low motivation, parent-child or other close relationship challenges, workplace stress among other issues. Together, we can think about ways to reach into your inner resources to be your most resilient self, whether that means accessing more self compassion, assertiveness, better boundaries or challenging those old beliefs that no longer serve you.

As an experiential and creative psychotherapist, I am passionate about working with those who have experienced trauma and relational struggles. Sometimes what we have experienced can be difficult to put into words, utilising the body, movement, music and play can support self expression, building of a coherent narrative and integration of experience. Use of experiential mediums in therapy is known to support healing from trauma experiences as well as support accessing therapy through offering more than words to explore experience. I also provide supervision to mental health professionals working with families.

Strategic psychotherapy is a brief therapy which is solution-focused and outcome-based. It focuses on HOW you do what you do and not WHY. I won’t be delving into your past and seek “reasons” (ie tough childhood), I uncover and address the very pillars you have unconsciously developed that create and sustain the problem. The integration of hypnotherapy accelerates the therapeutic outcomes. Clients experience relief more rapidly, as the hypnotic state enhances receptivity to change, streamlining the path to recovery.

Compassion for the human condition and the premise that we are not passive victims of our circumstances but have freedom to choose how we want to be, are the main foundations I work with. I believe that we all possess the natural self-healing capacity that is seated in the deep center of our being, and I see psychotherapy as the work of finding, unlocking and opening doors through which healing can flow, and seeds towards transformation can be nurtured. I also approach all the suffering and pain that clients present, as an opportunity to use the crisis for personal growth and as a pathway to a deeper connection with the true self.

Female Counsellors

Does it matter what gender my therapist is?

In general, this is not an important factor, as there is no relationship between a therapist’s gender and their efficacy. Some clients, however, prefer to see therapists of a particular gender, whether due to their own past experiences with men and women, or ingrained beliefs about how people of different genders think and behave. Exploring the roots of such preferences and considering what one wants to address in therapy can help someone determine whether their therapist’s gender truly matters to them.

Should I see a female therapist?

Many people—not just women—prefer to see a female therapist, either because they believe that a woman will be able to relate to their specific challenges (for example, sexism in the workplace) or because they imagine feeling more comfortable disclosing sensitive information to a woman. Such beliefs may not turn out to be accurate, however, and adhering too rigidly to a gender preference can at times hinder a client from finding the best therapeutic match.

Do therapists get specific training to help with women’s concerns?

Therapists are trained to provide care to clients of any gender. However, some therapists—both men and women—may pursue additional training in feminist therapy, gender-specific issues, or women’s mental health. Female clients may wish to ask prospective therapists whether they have received specific training in the client’s primary area(s) of concern, or whether they have worked extensively with women on issues similar to their own.

How can I inquire about a therapist’s experience in treating women?

It’s OK—even encouraged!—to ask a therapist directly whether and how often they have treated women in the past, or whether they have treated women dealing with the client’s most prominent concern(s). Competent therapists will be happy to share their educational background, preferred treatment modalities, and prior client experience to help an individual find the therapist best suited to their needs.
