“I’d love to help you develop a supportive, kind and caring relationship with yourself, and secure and fulfilling relationships with others. Working with you to understand why you respond to the world like you do, what really matters to you, and supporting behaviour that back up your ambitions is my jam. We all face challenges in how we relate to ourselves and the world. I believe developing a sense of psychological safety and flexibility, and nurturing emotional intelligence and agility are key to recovering, striving and thriving in all parts of your life”

You might be facing challenges such as anxiety or depression, navigating change, past trauma, unresolved grief, or exploring identity. You might be supporting a child, partner or parent through crisis or difficulty; learning how to manage a health condition; wanting to change unhelpful patterns or behaviours; or be in the process of repairing a relationship. You might be working towards self-awareness, using therapy as part of your self-care plan. Or, you might not know what you need, other than that you need help finding out. As a counsellor, I offer you my empathy and my support.

Hi, my name is Patrick and I cannot tell you how excited I am to be able to provide you with this service. As a Queer person from a CALD background who grew up in a conservative community with a high stigma around mental health illness, I understand what it is like to develop and live with poor mental health as a result of systemic concerns. Throughout my personal and professional life, I’ve always found it difficult to find a service that holistically caters to the mental health of people that live in complex systems (e.g., accounting for racial injustice, systemic oppression, complex trauma, and the patriarchy… to name a few).

I bring four decades of experience in mental health, art, design. I work with individuals, couples, and family members who seek to change their relationships with themselves and others. I aim to open possibilities to people who have little hope for change, struggle with depression, anxiety, and trauma symptoms, feeling overwhelmed and lost. This is often accompanied by counterproductive soothing behaviours such as substance use, addiction to gambling, gaming, sex, or screen use. Further, some clients may stay in relationships that deepen their belief that they cannot become the agents of their own lives.

It is said that the trauma we experienced in our past can inform the way we learn to experience our current world. Not having the supports we needed along the way may have also lead us to cope in unhealthy ways, all while searching for ease and peace. Unique to us all, unresolved pain and disconnection can feel too complex or overwhelming to face by ourselves. For many, a range of bio-psycho-social issues develop, including anxiety, depression, loss of motivation, interpersonal conflicts or a negative view of self or the world. So how do we begin to identify and learn healthier ways of coping and reconnecting with the self?

It's OK to feel daunted by the prospect of counselling; sessions with me will be collaborative and will go at your own pace. There will be no judgment, you won't have to talk about anything that feels too painful until you are ready and I will not tell you what to do. Sometimes people think they have to be “crazy” or have mental health issues, or have experienced a severe trauma to see a therapist. My response is, if it’s important to you, then it’s worth talking about with someone. It doesn’t matter how small you think the issue is, talking about it can help.

Going to therapy takes guts. Often, it takes a person, or a couple, years to move from contemplating therapy to booking a first appointment. It’s not an easy process. But, what you get out of therapy is directly related to what you put into it. And I will match your dedication with mine. The process of healing and recovery is also one of becoming and realising. Therapy is self-development at its most satisfying. Yes, it takes courage, effort, and, often, a leap of faith. But, if you are ready to give yourself the gift of therapy, I am here to take that leap with you.

I see psychotherapy as a collaborative journey of self discovery that can lead you to a more engaged and meaningful life. As we are all unique and complex beings, each of us will do this differently. Whether you feel stressed, overwhelmed, angry or depressed about some part of your life, as a therapist I will listen deeply, and hear what you say. Together, through our gentle conversations, we can find insights into your situation and identify the choices that are available to lead you to a better place. In my experience we all have the capacity to heal and grow in a caring and supportive environment.

Women's Issues Counsellors

How do you encourage a woman to go to therapy?

It’s helpful to express concern and love for the person while framing therapy as a tool for improving their life. Offering specific examples of how an individual may be suffering, and what effects it has on them, should be done with compassion and with empathy. It may be useful to devise a game plan—breaking the process down into parts, such as finding a therapist, making appointments, and looking into insurance coverage.

How can women prepare for therapy?

Women can prepare for therapy by being willing to talk about their past experiences and their private thoughts. Before a session, an individual may want to reflect on how they’ve felt since the last session and what’s happened in their lives. Between sessions, it can be useful to write down notes about their reaction to a given event or how they felt at a particular time.

How long does therapy for women’s issues often last?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual and the challenges they face. Therapy types like Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), Prolonged exposure therapy (PET), and Eye movement desensitisation and reprocessing (EMDR) can be brief, most often ranging from between 5 and 20 sessions. In some cases, such as for women with eating disorders, residential treatment may be recommended for an individual who is judged to be at high risk of self-harm. For any therapy, the duration will depend on the progress made and results realised.

How can women overcome stigma around specific challenges in order to seek therapy?

Women dealing with domestic abuse, sexual assault, eating disorders, and any other number of troubles may feel a stigma around seeking help. It’s important to remember that these issues are not uncommon and there is no shame in getting help for them. Therapy is confidential, and women can talk about their experiences without fear of judgment. Seeking therapy can be a courageous and liberating act, and an important step toward healing and recovery.
