We humans possess significant resilience, yet we are also quite vulnerable. There are numerous factors around us that can affect our wellbeing and can cause anxiety, sadness, hurt, guilt, anger, loneliness, sense of unfulfillment, etc. Sometimes painful memories from the past don’t allow us to create new memories. Our own thoughts and beliefs work against us at times. Behaviours that were once soothing and comfortable, over time, become destructive. Coping with loss can be extremely challenging. Argument and unresolved conflicts can damage our intimate relationships. Family members not getting along can result in lot of distress.

My wealth of lived experiences including gender transition inform my collaborative client centred counselling approach. Whilst presenting issues may include depression, anxiety, identity incongruence, dysphoria, trauma, interpersonal challenges, addiction, loneliness, and more, I seek to work with the underlying causes as I believe that through addressing the root causes of the presenting symptoms that psychological wellbeing can be achieved without judgement or further pathologisation.

Are you facing a crisis of faith from a religious upbringing or abuse in your spiritual community? Perhaps you were raised in a religious household, and you're still unraveling the lingering effects. Struggling with the impact of purity culture? Healing from religious trauma or deconstructing takes time, commitment, and self-compassion, but healing is possible! In the LGBTQIA+ community too? I get it. I provide a safe and affirming space for exploring your spirituality, sexuality and gender, on your terms.

My passion is working with Queer and Neurodivergent communities. I used my lived experience to bring understanding, empathy and patience to the therapeutic space. If you have had trouble in the past being put into boxes that don’t define you, or are wanting a more accepting and flexible therapeutic approach outside of CBT, then I might be the person for you. I want to support people in their journey to discover their authentic selves, and give some mental health tips and tricks along the way.

How does therapy for self-harm work?

A person may turn to self-injury so that they can distract themselves from their stress, depression, anxiety, or upsetting circumstances. Therapy can address the cause of an individual’s suffering. A therapist can help a person understand why they may want to self-harm and help the person learn new methods of coping. A person may have poor emotion regulation, and treatment such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) is helpful for breaking this behaviour. In addition, treatment such as dialectical behaviour therapy can help a person manage their tolerance of distress.

Which therapies are best for self-harm?

Specific approaches used by professionals include cognitive behavioural, dialectical behaviour, psychodynamic, and mentalisation-based therapies, among others. Cognitive behavioural and dialectical behaviour therapies are common approaches for people who have painful thoughts and past traumas. These therapies help an individual cope with distress, regulate emotions, and manage impulsive urges.

Does the tendency to self-harm mean the person is suicidal?

Having this urge does not mean the individual suffers from suicidal ideation. People who want to self-injure look to distract or alleviate themselves from the pain they are experiencing. People with suicidal tendencies want to end life altogether. However, this does not mean a person with the intent to self-harm will not attempt suicide.

How often and how long are therapy sessions for self-harm?

As with any type of therapy, sessions depend on the individual. Clients may see improvement within 20 sessions, at an average of 50 minutes per session, while others may opt for 20 to 30 sessions over, maybe, a six-month period. People, especially those with co-occurring conditions like depression and anxiety, may need to continue therapy for up to 12 to 18 months.
