If the price of the Encyclopedia is beyond your reach, or if you're
thinking of a person whose interest in psychology does not quite merit
eight volumes, this smaller work (159 pages, including glossary and
index), provides a quick and easy overview. Although the table of
contents looks like the syllabus for "Psych 101," this is decidedly not a
text. As a gift, it won't cause as big a splash as the Encyclopedia, but
how much of a splash can you expect for less than $9?
