Winifred Gallagher, author of Working on God (Modern Library, 2000)
and a journalist who has written for The Atlantic Monthly, climbs the
proverbial mountain to ask the gurus what the meaning of life is. These
"spiritual geniuses" include a no-nonsense friar saving orphans in India,
a mystical New England rabbi, a Buddhist nun living in a cave, a
professor of religious studies fighting to protect Muslim women from
abuse and an evangelist working with the poor in a Philadelphia slum,
among others. Gallagher concludes that "these spiritual geniuses are all
onto something, and somehow, in the end, it is the same thing."
