The effect of exercise on sleep patterns mimics that of antidepressantmedications, according to a report in the journal Sleep. A review of 38 separate studies found that following exercise, subjects spent less time in the REM, or dreaming, state of sleep, and that the start of REM sleep was delayed--just as it is by many antidepressant drugs. Scientists say the phenomenon deserves further study.
